What is Glycolic Acid?  What is aha?

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (or aha) derived from sugar cane. It incorporates other acids you may know, such as lactic acid (from yogurt, said to be Cleopatra's favorite), tartaric acid (from grapes), and citric acid (as you might guess, they come from citrus fruits).

Glycolic acid is one of a group of acids known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA). Alpha Hydroxy can be found natural is sugar cane, milk and fruit. The Glycolic acid that comes from sugar cane is considered the smallest of the aha group and will penetrate to the deeper layers of skin.

Alpha hydroxy acid (aha) is a group of organic acids that have recently become popular in the treatment of various skin diseases. Several of these acids are derived from fruits and are therefore often referred to as "fruit acids". For example, glycolic acid comes from sugar cane, citric acid comes from citrus fruits, and malic acid comes from apples.

What Does Glycolic Acid Do?

The exact mechanism of action of aha is not fully understood. However, it seems that the acid has a specific, separate effect on the epidermis and dermis. In the epidermis, it acts on the level of the layer. AHA causes the adhesive cells to relax, causing them to fall off. This effect is different from other acids, which have a lytic effect on the outermost cells of the stratum corneum.

Glycolic acid / aha can help in the thickening of the dermis which is an increase in the collagen and glycosaminoglycan in the dermis, this increase in dermal volume reduces the depth of wrinkles and scars.

Glycolic acid / aha can also help in reducing skin blemishes, acne breakouts, even out skin tone and giving you an amazing glowing skin.
